Grosvenor Square transformation maximising biodiversity, wellbeing and climate resilience

Grosvenor Square is undergoing a multi-million-pound transformation due to be completed in Summer 2026. The transformation is set to create a biodiverse-rich park with multiple green infrastructure types, designed to reconnect people and nature.

Grosvenor is leading a multi-million-pound transformation of Grosvenor Square — the most significant private investment in public green space in a generation, and in the heart of Mayfair. This landmark project will demonstrate how urban parks can serve both people and the planet, showcasing how urban green spaces can support the Wild West End’s aims of biodiversity, wellbeing, and climate resilience.

Designed by London-based architecture firm Tonkin Liu and delivered by BDP, the plans mark the fourth redesign in the square’s 300-year history, blending heritage and innovation. The design references the original 1720s layout, reinstating an elegant oval lawn framed by a footpath and encircled by a new woodland garden. The square will feature around 70,000 new plants, 44 new trees, new wetlands, and approximately 80,000 bulbs, creating space for wildlife, where residents and visitors can reconnect with nature. The redevelopment will strengthen biodiversity, support urban climate resilience, and help regulate heat and flood risk in the city.

Community engagement has been core to the project since 2017, with more than 7,000 people contributing to the designs, with a key focus on young people, whose voices helped shape the future of this historic public space. Their insights have ensured the proposals reflect the needs and values of those who live, work, and visit the area.

Alongside its ecological goals, the scheme includes a new education building funded by The Westminster Foundation, offering programmes on biodiversity, climate change, and the square’s history. A new kiosk, public toilets, and 300 extra seats will make the space more welcoming and inclusive. Expected to be completed in Summer 2026, Grosvenor Square’s renewal will stand as a lasting symbol of how cities can work in harmony with nature.
