The Portman Estate tree planting scheme in Marylebone
Since 2020, over 70 new trees have been planted across the Portman Estate in collaboration with Westminster City Council. The initiative enhances canopy cover, improves air quality, and contributes to The Queen’s Green Canopy, strengthening community wellbeing and biodiversity in Marylebone and Fitzrovia.
Working closely with Westminster City Council’s arboriculturist team, the Portman Estate surveyed potential sites and selected species most suitable for each location’s unique environment. Since 2020, 70 trees have been planted across the Estate. Collaboration was central to the process, engaging businesses and local partners, including the Marylebone Forum, Baker Street Quarter Partnership, and Marble Arch London BID, ensuring that community voices were integral in shaping the outcome.
A particularly proud milestone was reached in partnership with the WCC Tree Trust, when the 1,000th tree was planted on the Estate, which also contributes to The Queen’s Green Canopy initiative.
The impact of this work extends beyond aesthetics. Enhanced canopy cover now provides shade and natural cooling, supporting public wellbeing while helping to improve local air quality. The new planting also contributes to Westminster City Council’s wider ecological goals and response to the climate emergency. By bringing together expertise, community collaboration, and a shared vision for sustainability, this project has created lasting benefits for residents, workers, visitors, and the natural environment alike.
